Definition of shyness:

adj. shi·er (shr) or shy·er, shi·est (shst) or shy·est

1. Easily startled; timid.

b. Marked by reserve or diffidence: a shy glance.

3. Distrustful; wary: shy of strangers.

4. Not having paid an amount due, as one’s ante in poker.

So this is the dictionary definition of being shy, but what about the DATING definition of shyness. Its a bit simpler:

Shyness = No dating.

What we have learnt over time is that shyness will significantly impact on the number of dates you get. This should be fairly obvious to most of you, who would realize that the formula of More Tries = More Dates would mean that shy guys just don’t have the numbers, and its definitely true. The numbers just don’t work. Say there is a shy but above average looking guy. He stands in the corner. He has his arms folded and doesn’t approach anyone.  Even when other guys come up to him, he gives them 1 syllable answers and doesn’t engage in any activities or conversation.  Other guys will ALSO not talk to you. So this applies not only to your guy-girl interactions, but also with your friendships. So how can you beat this?  Here are the essential tips to help you on your way to overcoming shyness. Don’t be Love Shy! Be Love Confident!

Get rid of my shyness tips

1. Posture: Stand tall. Don’t slouch and droop your shoulders. Make sure that you have a strong core (ie stomach is held firm and chest is proud) – you don’t have to be a muscle man, but if you concentrate on these 2 things, you will appear very much more confident. Whilst you are at it, don’t just do it half arsed, actually stand in front of a mirror and check what you look like. Having a bad posture will make you look love shy.

2. Body language. Make sure that you aren’t giving signals that tell people to go away. Arm crossing, looking down at your shoes, turning away when someone is speaking to you, etc – all have an impact on whether people will talk to you. Remember, being shy does not only mean that you aren’t making the effort to speak to others, but also means that people won’t want to talk to you if you are not giving them the correct messages. By working on your body language, you will improve the number of people that come up and talk to you which in turn means More Tries = More Dates.

3. Eye contact. Although eye contact is in part to do with your posture and your body language as above, it is so important, it deserves its own bullet point. Eye contact with other girls AND other guys is an essential part of overcoming your shyness. Shy guys do not hold gazes. They look away as soon as they are looked at, and people perceive this as being shy/weak/not confident. Make the change. Scan the room with your eyes and hold gazes. But don’t stare. It IS a bit of a balance, but I’m sure you will get the right idea. A quick tip – when holding a gaze, especially with a female, in your mind just think: “You are reaaaaaaalllllly hot” and if you are still looking at them for any longer than that, then its too long. Don’t stare.

4. Be proactive. Overcoming shyness means you need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. Sure, you may not WANT to approach a group of girls – and yes, I do know that they may seem intimidating – but you will NEED to do this a few times to get it into your psyche that they will NOT bite you.  The trick is – start slow. Approach 2 girls – perhaps they aren’t too good looking. Have a chat, not longer than 2-3 minutes, and then move on.  Then approach 2 girls who are a bit better looking, and then next time approach 5 girls who are good looking.  And so on and so on.  Over time (A relatively short amount of time), this tip in itself can help you get past your shyness and move on.  Within a few weeks, you will be so much more confident, you will be amazed.

5. Be Curious. This tip will help you when you are talking to others. Its a great trick, and one that I tell everyone that I can. All you need to do is be curious. Or be interested. When are you next talking to someone and you are in the process of curing your shyness, all you need to do is to ask the other person all about themselves. Be interested in what they are doing, or what they have done. You’d be amazed at how much people love talking about themselves. This is fantastic as then you don’t even need to think about anything to talk about! Once you master this technique, you will never feel shy again when you meet new people.

6. Boost your numbers. The biggest point of this article is to boost your numbers, and the only way you’re going to do this is by asking more and more girls out. Beating shyness can all be seen by the number of people you ask out in one night. The trick to this (And this one you shouldn’t tell everyone about or it will be obvious).  With a few friends, have a scoreboard. Call it the Board of Success. Just ask a few friends to keep score of the number of girls you ask out in one night. This is an honor system and one that will rocket you to success. Make it a game. You get 1 point per person you ask out. 2 points if they give you their number, and 3 points if you get a kiss (even on the cheek).  Someone has to witness each event, or sight the number. By the end of the night, you will have a few numbers, have gotten a few kisses on the cheek, and at the end of the day – you’ve overcome shyness and stop being love shy!

Now go on, get out of here and make this work. I guarantee that if you follow these steps, you will get over your shyness before you know it. Be a love guru, not love shy!

1. Select your party carefully – During the festive season, you will receive many many offers to attend parties. There will be christmas parties for your work, your family bbq, your friends meetings for drinks, and more. Don’t go to everything thinking you will pick up. First things first: We didn’t choose the Whitney Houston version. It’s fine in its own right, but we prefer Dolly’s little country voice on this song to Whitney’s booming power ballad. But both versions became popular because of the song’s lyrics. Who doesn’t want a former squeeze to love them forever?

“Amazed” by Lonestar
This lilting country tune can charm even the most urbane of city folk. Play it for your girl or boy and it just might become “your” song.

“True” by Spandau Ballet
Most people can’t hear “True” without thinking first of “Sixteen Candles,” one of the classic, teenage romance flicks of the 1980s. For all its 80s smarm and saxophone solos, “True” is still a great love song.

“Destiny” by Zero 7

Regardless of what you think of “Titanic” as a film, its theme song is a classic tale of romance. Though it may have become a bit overexposed, you can’t deny the rousing crescendo-building in piece, or the passion in Celine Dion’s delivery. Besides, what other song would you want playing while you stand, arms outstretched, at the front of an ocean liner?

“You Are the Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder
Some may find it corny (although undoubtedly less corny than “I Just Called to Say I Love You”), but Stevie can sing anything and make it beautiful. Besides, when you’re wearing the rose-colored glasses of love, your sweetheart probably does seem like the sunshine of your life. “I Was Made to Love Her” may be a better choice for the soul purists out there.

“Fix You” by Coldplay
Organs and acoustic guitar make this track atmospheric and ethereal. Normally a policy of “fixing” a partner isn’t one I’d endorse, but Chris Martin means it in the nicest way possible. See “Protection” by Massive Attack if you like this one.

“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith
Indeed I don’t, and I would bet that neither do you, which is why this song is such a romantic masterpiece. Steven Tyler sings full throttle, but the sentiment is still tender and real. The opening few words say it all: “I could stay awake just to hear you breathing …”

“Lotta Love” by Neil Young
The Canadian hippie with the weirdest, and at the same time, coolest voice takes a break from harassing the “Southern Man” with this tender ballad. Check out Nicolette Larson’s version, which is a tad more 70s disco-funk (yes, there’s a disco cover of a Neil Young song!)

“The Look of Love” by Dusty Springfield
“The Look of Love” evokes images of mod, swinging London, but Dusty’s voice oozes sensuality and soul that reminded many of the sounds of 60s Detroit. This one is the perfect soundtrack for your next stay-at-home dinner for two.

“In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel certainly owes Cameron Crowe a thank you for including this song in Crowe’s movie “Say Anything.” The scene in which underdog Lloyd Dobler hoists a boom box overhead blaring “In Your Eyes” has become an iconic moment in romantic cinema and turned the Gabriel song into a classic.

“My Funny Valentine” by Chet Baker

Even if you have a grudge against hair metal, this song will have you waving your lighter in the air in no time. “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s

Writing a song for someone surely ranks among the most romantic acts on earth. When the song is actually good, the romantic quotient skyrockets. As much as you appreciated your 7th grade boyfriend’s 2-chord jam in your honor, Elton does it better.

“Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis
Honestly, the lyrics are pretty hard to decipher for this one. Is she singing about a love no one understands? Is this person someone who keeps hurting her yet she’s in love? It’s rather icky in places, with talk closing veins and bleeding love all over the place. Regardless, it’s a beautiful melody with beautiful vocals. Just beware of dedicating this to any potential sweethearts who may get the wrong idea.

“Unchained Melody” by Righteous Brothers
This song is almost obligatory in any list of love songs across the years. It’s a toss up whether this or “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” is the better song, but if we’re talking romance, we’ll go with the uplifting harmonies of “Unchained.”

“You Were Always On My Mind” by Willie Nelson
You may not think “romance” when you think of Willie, but the man’s all heart. Underneath that scraggly beard and the bandana is a sensitive man indeed. If you’re looking for a more upbeat song, check out Willie’s “Maria (Shut Up and Kiss Me),” a song that will make you want to grab a beer and dance.

“Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by the Police
Really? Everything? You don’t mind that your love never remembers to put the cap on the toothpaste? Or that when you walk under the umbrella it’s you that keeps on getting wet? Or that she snores really loudly? Now that’s romance!

“Hero” by Enrique Iglesias
Most men are probably wickedly jealous of Enrique’s good looks and his relationships with gorgeous women (tennis player Anna Kournikova, most famously). But having watched his father Julio make women swoon over the years, Enrique probably learned that having the guys hate you is greatly outweighed by the benefits of female attention.

“Alison” by Elvis Costello
Although the song is another one of those “songs to an ex,” the true romance comes from one of the greatest lyrics ever to appear in a love song: “Oh Allison/My aim is true.”

Music charts in the 80s and 90s were absolutely littered with romantic ballads, but many of them were the soulless kind that sounded manufactured on an assembly line. “Wonderwall” by Oasis
The lyrics are nonsense, and if you read any music press you’ll know the lead singer’s a lout, but despite all those things “Wonderwall” is a swoon-inducing love song. The strings and guitar combined with said lout’s soaring vocals make for an earnest, romantic song.

“Breathe” by Faith Hill
Faith Hill and husband Tim McGraw have sung a few romantic duets, but her solo hit made a huge impression on those who can appreciate a good love song. “Breathe” was a huge crossover hit and proved mainstream record buyers would accept a love song sung by a country singer.

“Protection” by Massive Attack, featuring Tracy Thorn
Not everyone may find a woman singing about protecting her man romantic, but you can’t argue with the sentiment in Tracy Thorn’s voice. Also check out “Missing” by Everything but the Girl, which is Tracy’s usual gig.

“Fallin’” by Alicia Keys
Soulful piano ballad that sounds both like a past era and of its time. Anyone who’s been involved in a rocky love affair can appreciate the sentiment in this song, particularly when you keep finding yourself falling back in love despite yourself.

“Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” by Cole Porter
There are very few love songs most of us know from the 1920s, but Cole Porter’s song has stood the test of time with its witty lyricism and imagery. The most quoted lines are usually: “Birds do it/Bees do it/Even educated fleas do it/Let’s fall in love.” This is the song that will add a spring to your step when you first fall in love.

“Melt With You” by Modern English
Skinny, pale English new-wavers don’t make for your typical romance experts, but they always seem like big authorities on love when they open their mouths to sing, don’t they? Or at least this particular song has resonated with lovers since its release. The fact that it was used in a Burger King ad for a few years diminished its impact somewhat, but thankfully we can all now hear this song and not immediately think of flame-broiled Whoppers.

“You’re Still The One” by Shania Twain
So many songs are written about infatuation, initial attraction or that spark that exists in the early stages of a relationship – what about the rest of the relationship? That’s probably why so many record buyers were touched by “You’re Still the One.” There’s probably nothing more romantic than knowing that, despite your flaws, idiosyncrasies and other foibles, your sweetheart would still pick you all over again.

“Take My Breath Away” by Berlin
Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” was made for slow-motion camera work, wind machines and billowing curtains. It fit perfectly with the love scenes between Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” and consequently became the soundtrack to thousands of 80s crushes.

Timing: Getting your timing right in every part of dating a girl is never more important than when asking a girl out. Try not to ask a girl out when she is preoccupied or busy with something – you are seriously reducing your chances. Ask her when she is happy, and free. A good time would be when you’ve just told a good joke, or when you both have had a laugh at something. Studies show that a persons mind is far more receptive to suggestion when they have just had a laugh. Use this fact to your advantage.

Preparation: Some guys go to huge lengths to prepare for asking a girl out. Unforutunately this isn’t the best thing to do in the long term. Sure there may be a few couples out there with romantic stories of how they met, or how a girl was asked out – but I know that they are just one in a thousand. If you follow this thought, you will be so scared and pressured when asking a girl out, that she will think you are crazy! Don’t ask her out with sky writing or on the megascreen at the superbowl – save those for later!

What to say: So what should you say when asking a girl out on a date? Of course, as I link to in many of my other articles, being confident is the key. You do not need to have a silver tongue to ask a girl out on a date. Make sure that you don’t stutter, and that you can ask her out with confidence and that will make you 50% more successful for a start. Tell yourself that she is lucky to be asked out by someone like you. This will flow on to the way you ask her out.

Dealing with rejection: I’ve already touched on this in previous articles, but keep in mind that you will NEVER have a 100% record. You will never even have 50%. If you got a date 25% of the time you asked a girl out, you are already doing well. Keep that in mind for later down the track, as you can never let a rejection put you down. Some of the most successful guys are the ones that just keep trying and trying. And never back down to a different standard to what you’re looking for. ie: Just because you didn’t get the 9/10 stunner at the bar doesn’t mean you have to have 10 drinks and pick up the 3/10 she-male standing next to her at 5am in the morning. Keep you head up.

OK, so you’re probably wondering why I haven’t given you some lines or some ideas of how to pick up, but that’s the point. Asking a girl out on a date shouldn’t be about fancy lines and locations. Its all about your attitute, and mental preparation. A girl will say YES if you project to her that you are worth going out with.

A First Date

A boy and his date were parked on a back road some distance from town, doing what boys and girls do on back roads some distance from town. Things were getting hot and heavy when the girl stopped the boy.
“I really should ave mentioned this earlier, but I’m actually a hooker and I charge $20 for sex,” she said.
The boy just looked at her for a couple of seconds, but then reluctantly paid her, and they did their thing.
After the cigarette, the boy just sat in the driver’s seat looking out the window. “Why aren’t we going anywhere?” asked the girl.
“Well, I should have mentioned this before, but I’m actually a taxi driver, and the fare back to town is $25.”

The Blind Date

Brad had a blind date with Ashley for the prom and, as the evening progressed, he found himself attracted to her more and more. After some really passionate embracing, he said, “Tell me, do you object to making love?”
“That’s something I have never done before,” Ashley replied.
“Never made love? You mean you are a virgin?” Brad was amazed.
“No, silly!” she giggled. “I’ve never objected!”

The Generation Gap

It’s the Spring of 1957 and Bobby goes to pick up his date. He’s a pretty hip guy with his own car. When he goes to the front door, the girl’s father answers and invites him in.
“Carrie’s not ready yet, so why don’t you have a seat?,” he says.
“That’s cool” says Bobby.
Carrie’s father asks Bobby what they’re planning to do. Bobby replies politely that they will probably just go to the soda shop or a movie.
Carrie’s father responds “why don’t you two go out and screw? I hear all the kids are doing it.”
Naturally, this comes as a quite a surprise to Bobby-so he asks Carrie’s Dad to repeat it.
“Yeah,” says Carries father, “Carrie really likes to screw; she’ll screw all night if we let her!”
Well, this just made Bobby’s eyes light up, and his plans for the evening was beginning to look pretty good. A few minutes later, Carrie comes downstairs in her little poodle skirt and announces that she’s ready to go. Almost breathless with anticipation, Bobby escorts his date out the front door. About 20 minutes later, Carrie rushes back into the house, slams the door behind her, and screams at her father:
” DANGIT DADDY….! IT’S CALLED THE TWIST!”

Grandmother’s Dating Advice

There was a young virgin that was going out on a date for the first time and she told her grandmother about it.

Her grandmother says, “Sit here and let me tell you about those young boys. He is going to try to kiss you; you are going to like that, but don’t let him do that.”

She continued, “He is going to try to feel your breast; you are going to like that, but don’t let him do that. He is going to try to put his hand between your legs; you are going to like that, but don’t let him do that.

Three Tickets

The boyfriend said, “We’re going to have a GREAT time Saturday. I’ve gotten three tickets for the big game.”
“Why do we need three ?” asked the girl.
“They’re for your Father, Mother, and kid sister.” he replied with a sheepish grin.

Top Ten Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter- and Living.

Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk you’d better be delivering a package, because you’re sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter’s body, I will remove them.

Rule Three: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don’t take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four: I’m sure you’ve been told that in today’s world, sex without utilizing a “barrier method” of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five: It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is “early.”

Rule Six: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

Rule Seven: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don’t you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

Rule Eight: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka — zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which features chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

Rule Nine: Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless God of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

Rule Ten: Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car — there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine.
